Econet Wireless Zimbabwe was founded in 1993 by Strive Masiyiwa, and he remains the majority shareholder through his company Econet Wireless Global which is based in Mauritius and London. Mr Masiyiwa left Zimbabwe in 2000 and is not involved in the day-to-day management of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, which is a listed company on the local stock exchange. Since leaving Zimbabwe more than 25 years ago, Mr Masiyiwa has established himself as a global business leader, and his numerous business interests are not represented by or through the Zimbabwean-based subsidiary.

As a public listed company since 1998, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is one of the most widely held companies in the country and represents the highest volume of trade on the ZSE. Its shareholders include over 80% of the country’s pension and mutual funds. It is also the most widely held company by ordinary Zimbabwean retail investors.
